For those who’ve bought a dehumidifier, how much have you been able to turn up your A/C?

Veritatum17 asked:

And have you noticed cost-savings?
Have you noticed a reduction in mold or mildew?

Will using fans in the basement be as good as a dehumidifier to keep the mostier out. It would be cheaper?

milt13077 asked:

I am looking for a cheaper way to keep the basement dry, I hear just keeping the air moving would help.

The Advantages of a Dehumidifier

Robert Thompson asked:

Adding a dehumidifier to your home is one of the most important steps that homeowners can take to ensure that they reduce the amount of moisture that they are exposed to. Excessive amounts of moisture in the home can lead to excessive levels of mold and dust mites. This can cause serious health consequences, aggravate allergies, and cause respiratory problems to become worse. For those who have compromised immune systems, asthma, allergies, or other respiratory problems a dehumidifier is essential to maintaining good health.

A dehumidifier operates through the process of condensation. When air becomes cold it can no longer retain moisture and the moisture in the air will pool. This is the process used by a dehumidifier. The air circulates through the dehumidifier, the dehumidifier cools the air, and then the moisture is siphoned out through the back of the unit. If you’ve ever had an air conditioner, you’ve noticed how the back of the air conditioner continually drips or leaks water. This is the same process used with a dehumidifier. A dehumidifier is the perfect solution for those who are in humid areas but do not run air conditioning units.

Another great use for a dehumidifier is when someone has a basement that contains too much moisture, or if it has been subjected to leaks or flooding. The excess moisture can lead to rapid growing mold that can destroy any items that you have stored in the basement. Since installing air conditioners in the basement is often an impractical solution, keeping a dehumidifier in the basement solves the problem. Additionally, many people fail to realize the impact that mold in the basement has on the health of everyone who lives in the home. This mold can cause serious health and respiratory problems for residents and may even have life threatening consequences. Removing moisture is the number one way to reduce the amount of mold and allergens in the atmosphere.

When choosing a dehumidifier it’s important to determine how large the unit is as well as how much water the unit will both hold and remove. Since you will need to empty the water you will also need to choose a unit that has the water removal method that works best for your needs. If you need to manually empty the tank when it becomes full, make certain that it won’t be too heavy for you to carry. You might find that it is best to choose a dehumidifier that enables you to connect a water drain hose so that you won’t have to concern yourself with emptying the water.

No matter what type of dehumidifier you select or how large the unit is, it is imperative that you care for your unit according to the manufacturer’s instructions in order to ensure that your dehumidifier continues working properly. Depending on your unit’s specifications, filters may need cleaning and coils may need special care to prevent them from freezing. Always read the manufacturer’s recommendations and follow them.

Reasons To Use A Dehumidifier

Kevin Bailey asked:

A humidifier is an appliance that one uses to draw excess humidity from the air. There are factors that give people reasons to use a dehumidifier. There are four types of dehumidifiers that bring out these reasons clearly. The first is the compressor based one. It mainly draws air from the room over a filter and then passes it over cold coils. Because the coils are cold, the air condenses and becomes water which goes into a bucket. The air is then subjected to heat and blown outside the humidifier. This will make the room airy as there will be no more moisture. Humidifiers keep rooms airy.

Another type of humidifier is the peltier that uses a surface, usually a cold, metal one to condense the air upon. With this dehumidifier, one should not use it below 15 degrees Celsius. This one is used in small places like wardrobes. Humidifiers are good instruments for airing the clothes in our wardrobes so that they are not damp on any occasion. Thirdly is the desiccant dehumidifier. This dehumidifier works in the same way as the compressor based one only that instead of using coils, it uses a wheel filled with material usually moisture absorbent and desiccant based. In this one, the air is reheated to ten degrees Celsius. It too is used for aerating rooms. Some times the undergarments and socks in people’s drawers need dehumidifying too. The silica gel based dehumidifier which often comes in a rechargeable cassette or a tub, can only be used in small compartments like the drawers in which they keep them.

Most people’s windows are not spared either when it comes to humidity. The little droplets of water are evidence enough that there is humidity in the air. This can make the general atmosphere of the room damp and make the windows look untidy. Dehumidifiers help to keep the general appearance of a room dry, clean and well kept.

Humidity can lead to the growth of molds in a room or on the windows of a house. These molds are dangerous to people’s health. They, as well as excessive moisture can affect a person’s lung and lead to lung diseases. Molds can cause Asthma in people as well. The damp heat can affect one’s nasal passages too. Humidifiers play a big role in keeping diseases at bay. Dust mites are another reason why there should be no excess humidity in one’s house. These dust mites leave debris in their wake and this can cause problems for Asthma patients.

During the summer, it can be uncomfortably hot in the house. A dehumidifier can help one work through the day in their house or office during the hot season. Humidity can make all furniture made from wood to start rotting. This can be a waste of money and time if someone were to do it again and again. Humidifiers in the house can help guard against this.

The bulk of the reasons to use dehumidifier are a true testimony of just how the instrument is important in people’s lives. The serious consequences that can arise in its absence too show that this is a must have instrument in one’s house.

How can i make a homemade dehumidifier?

arcadas67 asked:

It has to be cheap and able to lower the relative humidity to about 50%, in a ventilated closet of 2 feet*3 feet*6 feet. The closet is constantly ventilated by two computer fans, one for the outtake and the other for intake.I am interested in constructing a “refrigirating” device of low power consuption and somehow attach it to my closets intake ,so the incoming air cools and forms water out of the extra humidity.Do you think it could be done?

Will getting a dehumidifier in my room discourage earwigs?

crzycoookies asked:

My room doesn’t have much ventilation and there are 2 aquariums so it gets humid.. Recently earwigs started to move in. While my aquatic frog may appreciate the occasional earwig that falls into her aquarium, I don’t! Will a dehumidifier help?

Dehumidifier and Oscillating fan to cool room?

jonathanwechter asked:

I just read an article that said to cool your room to get a dehumidifier and an oscillating fan and that this would have the same affect as lowering your a/c. Is there any truth to this?

We have double glazing but it is an old style bay windowed house with tiles to the outside on the bay. The bedroom gets really cold and there is mildew, damp and condensation on the windows most of the time. Would a dehumidifier solve the problem.
