Dehumidifiers: A Boon To Damp Homes

Gabriel Adams asked:

While humidifiers are a boon to moisture deprived homes during cold weather, dehumidifiers remove moisture that can condense in the cooler rooms of your home, such as the basement or crawl space. Dehumidifiers remove the moisture from the warm, humid air of your home. Warm air is moved past two coils in a similar fashion to an air conditioner. Moisture from the air condenses on one set of coils. The water then drips into a reservoir or through a hose to a drain. The other coil warms the air which is then expelled into the house or room.

Although the dehumidifying unit does not cool the air, it makes it more comfortable by decreasing the humidity that can cause mold and mildew to accumulate and cause health problems for your family and your pets.

There are several signs that will let you know that you need a dehumidifier in your home. First, if you see condensation on your windows, there is too much moisture inside your home. Check for wet spots on the ceiling and walls. A musty smell, stuffiness in the room, or an increase in allergy symptoms can all be signs that that there is too much humidity in your air. Dehumidifiers are also used quite often when there has been flooding in a home, such as a hot water heater leak.

You need to check a dehumidifier’s reservoir capacity if you are buying a new one as a larger capacity reservoir works more efficiently and would need to be emptied less frequently than a smaller unit. If your dehumidifier has an air vent on top, you can place in against a wall. If it doesn’t, you’ll want to make sure that it sits away from walls or furniture so that the air can circulate properly. Make sure that all windows and doors are closed when you are using your dehumidifier as this will allow it to work most efficiently. If you use a hose drainage system, make sure that you do not create an electrical hazard by allowing water to flow near plugs or wires.

Dehumidifiers are an excellent way of making the conditions in your home more comfortable and healthy.

Keep your Child From Becoming Another Swimming Pool Drowning Victim

Chuck Jaymes asked:

You already know that owning your own swimming pool provides a great deal of enjoyment, especially for children. Did you also know that drowning is the second leading cause of injury-related death for children ages 1-14?

Many individuals with children who build residential swimming pools have no idea how serious the problem of children drowning in swimming pools is. The following statistics provide shocking evidence of what is often referred to as the silent killer:

• The Center for Disease Control reports that 782 children up to age 14 died from swimming pool drowning in 2003

• Drowning is consistently the leading cause of accident related death for children under 5 years

• Each year over 300 children under age 5 drown in residential swimming pools

• Of all age groups, children ages 1-4 have the highest drowning death rate

• 5%-20% of children who survive near drowning suffer severe and permanent disability

That drowning is often called the silent killer is highly accurate. An astounding 70% of children who drown in home swimming pools have their parents nearby, unaware of trouble. Many times there are no splashing sounds or cries for help. It can happen dangerously fast; a child can drown in the time it takes to answer a phone.

It isn’t just children who are prone to drowning. According to the National Center for Injury Prevention & Control, in 2003, there were 3,306 unintentional fatal drownings in the United States. This figure does not include boating related drownings. If a child has been drowning, taking speedy action is the key to successful recovery. Rescuing the child quickly and restarting breathing immediately are vital to survival. The difference between normal recovery and permanent brain damage can be a matter of seconds.

To help keep your children and guests safe in your indoor pool or spa, there are certain fundamentals you should follow to ensure a fun and safe time for all.

Basic Swimming Pool Safety Precautions:

• Learn CPR. This is invaluable if you own a swimming pool

• Absolutely NEVER leave young children unsupervised near a pool or spa

• During social gatherings, appoint and rotate “Designated Watchers”

• Keep a life saving flotation device near the pool at all times. (Do Not use the device as a substitute for supervision)

• Install a fence or barrier that is at least 4 feet tall completely around the pool (It is estimated that widespread use of pool fencing could prevent 50% to 90% of pediatric pool near drownings and drownings)

• Fence gates should be self-closing and self-latching. The latch should be above the reach of small children

• Vertical fence slats should be less than 4 inches apart to keep small children from squeezing through

• Use a pool safety cover

• For indoor pools, door alarms that are unreachable by small children

• Do Not expose young children to spas or hot tubs as they are susceptible to overheating

• Keep all glass containers away from the pool area

• Emphasize the need for constant pool supervision to babysitters

By employing these methods, you will greatly reduce the risk of accidents in your swimming pool or spa. An effective pool fence or barrier prevents children from getting under, over or through. Even though it’s not possible to drown-proof your children, swimming lessons help instill a sense of respect for the water by understanding the potential danger of water.

Remember, there is no substitute good supervision. By following proven pool safety precautions, you and your family can get full enjoyment from your pool safely. These helpful hints are brought to you by the concerned staff at Swimming Pool Dehumidifiers LLC.

Basement Dehumidifiers to Dry Your Damp Basement

Terro White asked:

When constructed properly with correct ventilation, basement should ideally be dry. But somehow most basements end up becoming a victim to dampness. In case, the humidity level in your basement crosses the mark of 50%, it becomes a breeding ground for mildews, molds and several other allergens. Rotting of wooden furniture and allergies among the family members are a common problem that people face due to such conditions.

The method of working of a dehumidifier is similar to that of air conditioners and refrigerator. However, dehumidifiers extract humidity without sending forth the cold breeze. Purchasing a basement dehumidifier require some planning to make the correct choice.

Area of the basement

The foremost thing is to know the area of the basement that needs to be dehumidified. If the area is quite large, Santa Fe dehumidifiers are a good choice. They perfectly suit the places that are little wet and require moisture removal through dehumidification, which can lower it to a 55 degrees mark.

Nonetheless, in case your budget doesn’t allow you to make a big investment on the dehumidifier, you can consider Millennium low temp dehumidifiers. It is most appropriate for the area of the size 800-1100 square feet.

A portable or a fixed unit?

Another important thing that needs to be considered is, if you need an installed basement dehumidifier or a portable dehumidifier? While you may carry portable dehumidifier to different sections of your basement, you will not have this flexibility with a fixed dehumidifier unit.

Noise level

When purchasing a dehumidifier, you also must not forget to check its noise level, as some are noisy, while others are quite silent. So, there are many factors that ought to be considered while making a purchase for basement dehumidifiers. Make sure that you keep in mind the mentioned points so as to select the best basement dehumidifier that suits your requirements.

Maintenance of the basement dehumidifier

One thing that is commonly noticed with dehumidifiers is that as they usually remain out of people’s everyday task, many homeowners tend to forget about their maintenance, which is very important. It is necessary to unfill and clean these dehumidifiers at regular intervals, else bacterial growth will soon start to proliferate. You may find that in some dehumidifiers, there is no collection container inside. Instead a hose can be taken to the floor drain which is an easy solution to the problem. This is especially useful for working people who could not spare out much time from their daily schedule.

Now, what are you waiting for? Go and get the best dehumidifier and bid farewell to all the molds, allergens and health risks that are associated with high moisture level and ensure healthy living of your family. Internet is a great global marketplace to lookout for the best deals to purchase the superior quality basement dehumidifiers at pocket-friendly rates. What more? You can make the purchase at the comfort of your home. So, find a solution to the allergens, molds and mildews in your home with these dehumidifiers and start clicking soon!

How to properly operate/program dehumidifier while we are away?

curious1223 asked:

We bought a dehumidief at a walmart (that’s the only retailer within 45 miles in rural western maryland) to use in the basement of our vacation log home. It had settings for both cycle (2 or 4 hours on and off) and percent humidity (ranges from 35 to 70 I think). We connected it to a drain with a hose, so tank capacity is not a question. We bought it because there was a lot of condensation on the pipes and the well pressure tank in the basement. How should we set it to run while we are away (sometimes for weeks)? The manual is of no help. It’s Goldstar brand made by LG. Should we set both the cycle & humidity percent? Is it normal to leave dehumidier running for long periods of time? Any other tips on proper operation would be appreciated. It said something in the manual about not using in temperatures less than 65 degrees. The basement is always cold, with temperatures in the low-to-mid sixties. Thanks!
