Easy Ways To Kill Mold Fast

Tim Ryan asked:

Mold is an ever increasing problem for households across the globe. The results of harbouring mold are wide ranging from damaged home furnishings to polltution of the atmosphere with potentially harmful allergens that may cause symptoms like coughing, sneezing and such like. Fortunately however there are ways of tackling this problem, if you wish to know how to kill mold and enjoy a better standard of living then read on!

Actually mold is not the most threatening of organisms and can be killed by standard household bleaches and disinfectants. The real problem with this is that mold has a real tendency to return time and time again. This is why we ought to search a little further in order to track down the real cause of the mold.

When trying to get rid of mold stopping the supply of water is the most important thing to do. Two of the most usual causes of mold are high humidity level and leaking pipes.

Two simple things that you can start doing immediately are to install a dehumidifier and a fan. A good dehumidifier that comes with a HEPA filter can almost guarantee that the air being thrown out contains no mold spores and also lowers the humidity in a room by removing moisture from the sir. Secondly running a fan aid in ensuring that air circulates and stop moisture gathering in one place. Often people are worried about the noise level of such appliances and ask “Are dehumidifiers quiet?”, well yes there are plenty of dehumidifyer designed specifically to be quiet so they can be run in rooms where we normally live without any undue disturbance.

However neither of these will help if you have leaky pipes or any other persisting source of moisture entering the house. Water entrance is most likely to be occurring in your attic or basement so have a good search around here. These must all be eliminated entirely as just one single drip can ensure that mold spores keep reproducing and persisting.

The potential damage mold can do to both the value of your property and your health certainly makes it worth getting on top of. In the long run it will be far better to get on top of the mold situation in your house once and for all.

Air Conditioners: What the Sales Person Says and What Actually Is Important

Barney Garcia asked:

Although air conditioners have been around from the early years of the last century, the industry has been witnessing a tremendous growth in the past few years. This sudden interest among customers have led to new products being developed and marketed by all the brands big or small. This flood of new models has made it difficult for many customers to choose the right unit for their needs.

The problem is further complicated by different sales persons promoting their products in different ways. There are those who claim that air conditioners can replace your need for dehumidifiers. It is a fact that air conditioners do control the humidity of the air. But it is equally true that air conditioners can in no way be compared to dehumidifiers. The primary task of an air conditioner is to regulate the temperature of an enclosed space, be it a room or an entire building. That it dehumidifies is an additional benefit. But it is not a replacement for a dehumidifier.

First of all, the freestanding air conditioner is the easiest to install. In fact there is hardly anything to install. You only have to plug it in and it is ready to start working. But with window air conditioners, and more so with central air conditioners, you need to go through a lot of installation work. This does not only mean that you have to put up with a considerable amount of hassle, but you also got to spend a significant sum of money to get the units installed. There are no such costs with a freestanding air conditioner.

Then there are those who claim that air conditioner can be a good replacement for an air purifier. Again such claims are highly exaggerated. Of course most air conditioners do come with a filter but the kind of filtration an air conditioner provides is in no way comparable to the filtration provided by an air purifier with a HEPA filter. So if someone has severe allergic or asthma problems, installing an air condition would not be good enough.

What however is important about air conditioners is hardly stressed on by the average sales person. They would seldom talk about the energy efficiency of the air conditioner though that is an important deciding factor. The energy efficiency of your air conditioner would decide how much your running costs you will need to bear. And since by choosing the proper air conditioner you can save up to 40% of your electricity bills, the efficiency of your air conditioner is very important.

The other thing that is important is the capacity of air conditioner you need. The capacity you will need in your unit would depend on the room you want to install it in. all you got to know is the floor area of the room and quoting that figure would help the air conditioner contractor to guide you on what capacity of air conditioner you need.

How to Get Rid of Silverfish Insect

Craig Smith asked:

A Silverfish is about 1/2 inch long, with a uniform silvery color over the upper surface. Their bodies are long and slender, flattened. The bodies are broad at the front, and gradually tapering toward the rear. Silverfish females may lay over 100 eggs during a lifetime. Eggs are laid singly or two to three at a time in small groups, hatching in three to six weeks. Young silverfish and firebrats resemble adults except being smaller, white and take on the adult color in four to six weeks. Adults may live two to eight years. Firebrats lay about 50 eggs at one time in several batches. Eggs hatch in about two weeks under ideal conditions.

Silverfish and firebrats, depending on the species, may reach maturity in three to twenty-four months. These insects normally hitchhike into the home in food, furniture, old books, papers and old starched clothing. Unlike other insects, they continue to molt after becoming adults. Forty-one molts have been recorded for one firebrat. Populations do not build up fast. A large infestation in the house usually indicates a longtime infestation.

Silverfish prefer a dark moist environment and they require a large supply of starchy foods and mold. They are considered to be terrible nuisance pests that will feed on wallpaper, books and papers. They are very fast moving and travel throughout buildings and houses. Once silverfish insects find a good food source they stay close to it and are very hard to get rid of. Silverfish are found in basements, kitchens, sinks, bathtubs, in bookcases, on closet shelves, behind baseboards, wallpaper, window or door frames, wall voids, and sub-floor areas. They can be found in wood shingles or sidings on houses, they may enter the home from these. Silverfish can be a year long problem.

Dehumidifying your home helps to lessen the moisture in your home, this is favored by these pests. Several different methods for dehumidifying your home are mending leaking pipes, ventilate closed rooms and attics, and eliminate standing water and using a dehumidifier.

Using a silicon gel such as Drione Dust will help eliminate these pests. For silverfish in your home a good residual treatment around the perimeter of your home with a pesticide from your local hardware store. Spray along the foundational wall, with a two or three foot band. Look for the following:

Cyonara 9.7, Demon WP/Cyper WP or Talstar One/Bifen IT: last for two to three months.

All these products are odorless. The wettable powder (WP) formulation in the Demon WP and Cyper WPwill leave a slight film that can be seen against dark surfaces. The Cyonara 9.7, Bifen IT or Talstar One do not leave a film.

However if you have a more severe problem with silverfish, look into stored boxes and the insulation in your attic. It is best to dust or bait these areas for greater control. When you use baits or dusts, you do want to get it as close as possible to their habitats to be effective. You never want to bait and dust in areas that are visible. Dust needs to be in hidden areas such as: Attic Insulation, behind refrigerators and ovens, boxes, light fixtures, electrical outlets and under siding.

Sanitation is important but not entirely effective in reducing populations because insects often reside between wall partitions, in insulation materials, in books and papers, among book shelves and in other protected places. However, be sure to remove old stacks of newspapers, magazines, papers, books and fabrics plus foodstuffs spilled and stored for long periods of time. Often reducing available water and lowering the home’s relative humidity with dehumidifiers and fans is helpful. Repair leaking plumbing and eliminate moisture around laundry areas. Lighting a dark, sheltered area may force these insects to move to new sites where they can be controlled more easily. Once the infestation has been eliminated, sanitation will help prevent reinfestation. Make sure you vacuum all cracks and crevices of hard wood floors with vacuum attachment. Silverfish can get down into the smallest of places. Wallpaper glue can serve as a silverfish meal. If the corners or the edges of a strip of wall paper are peeling or coming up you will need to either reattach it, cut it off, or worst case scenario (and most effective) remove the wallpaper altogether.

Although silverfish can be terrible houseguests to get rid of, it is not impossibility. You are able to get rid of these unwanted critters over a matter of time just being patient and keeping things clean and dry. Try several of the options if you have too. One of them will work and you will soon be rid of the rotten little insects.

Are dehumidifiers really helpful in cooling houses and lowering electric bills?

Cashe asked:

We have a townhouse, (2 floors of living space and a basement) in NYC and use only window a/c. Would a dehumidifier help? I know that reducing the humidity will help the air feel cooler, but will the cost of running the unit outweigh the benefits?

When it Comes to Mold, Be Aggressive. Regain Control of Your Home With Cleaning Products

Drago Marxx asked:

First of all, what is Mold? Mold is essentially another term for microscopic fungi. Some kinds of mold are beneficial (the good guys) while some are harmful (the bad guys). The good guys are the reason why we have tasty (but sometimes stinky) cheeses, sausages and soy sauce. While the bad guys cause allergic reactions, neurological problems, death and not to mention, millions in cash are wasted every single year. So first things first, mold infestations should be prevented, but you might ask, how? Well, it should be noted that mold grows in humid areas that have a lot of moisture. Even if there’s just a little bit of moisture, the possibility of mold infestation is high. Also, if the quality of the air is not so good, then you might as well call that area mold territory. Here are some preventive measures so that you will live (or work) in a mold-free environment:

First of all, if mold is a recurring feature in your workplace or home, then it is likely that you are not resolving the underlying cause. Ask yourself if the quality of the air in your house is good. Also, do you immediately fix any leaks when rainy season comes? Even if you spend a lot of money on anti mold products or cleaning products but you don’t resolve the real causes of mold, then it definitely won’t go away. Mold will keep coming back until either you move out or renovate your home.

Second, if the mold infestation in your home is already widespread, contact professionals immediately. Have someone examine your home and help him (or her) in the process of determining the source of mold. Be the one to initiate and ask what are good anti mold products or cleaning products that are as effective as they say they are.

Did you know that mold is caused by moisture so the first step in determining the source of mold is by finding the source of moisture? Well, determining the source of mold is as easy (or hard) as determining the source of moisture. It could be your garden, bathroom, etc.

When you discover the source of moisture, it is advisable that you buy a good quality dehumidifier. Although some people argue that they do little to help, dehumidifiers still decrease humidity in the air. Also, if you are painting new walls or replacing wallpapers that have been damaged by mold, it is best that you use mold products and mildew resistant paint. Indoor air cleaning equipments also do the trick. But you really have to go out of your way and look for a good quality air cleaning equipment. Don’t worry; air cleaners will not take up a huge chunk of your living room or bedroom.

If ever you experienced flood or if you accidentally flooded the bathroom, then make sure that you take away all wet carpets, furniture, etc and use fans, heaters and your handy dandy dehumidifier so that any traces of moisture will be gone and mold will have no way of materializing. The best way for prevention is always to take action immediately. If you see a wet spot in your roof, have it fixed. If your pipes are not working properly, contact a plumber immediately. But don’t forget to use other preventive measures as well and apply mold remediation products so you won’t be sorry in the long run. It’s all just a matter of taking preventive measures, addressing the root cause, researching and doing your homework. Remember; a mold free area is a happy area.

Benefits of Mitsubishi Dehumidifiers in the Home

Dry it Out asked:

There are a great many different kinds of domestic dehumidifiers that are available today.  However the Mitsubishi dehumidifiers that you can get are proving to be some of the most effective of them all.  For anyone whose home is suffering from moisture (condensation) issues these units can quickly offer a solution.

The dehumidifiers that Mitsubishi make offer some extra features that you will not find on many of the other makes and models of these units available.  Along with them having directional flow capabilities they include a laundry drying and mildew guard feature.

Why should you consider buying one of the Mitsubishi dehumidifiers for your home?  Below we provide some of the reasons to consider purchasing this kind of dehumidifier for the home.

Reason 1 - Every day a family can produce up to 15 liters of moisture just through them breathing, cooking, bathing and drying clothes.  Should you allow moisture to accumulate in your home this can lead to you suffer not only health problems but damage being caused to furniture in your home and your home as well.  Through the installation of a dehumidifier you can maintain the levels of moisture (humidity) inside your home better.

Reason 2 - If the levels of damp remain high within a house the chances of mildew and mould forming are much greater.  However by installing any of the Mitsubishi dehumidifiers in a home the problem of the damp can be rectified and so preventing the growth of mildew and mould.  Not only can mould and mildew damage the house itself but without realizing it the people in the home are breathing in their spoors and this can lead to serious health problems for some.

Reason 3 - Not only can Mitsubishi dehumidifiers remove moisture from the air they can also remove dust, smoke and pollen from it.  So the chances of  people who have these units installed in their homes suffering from allergies or asthma are reduced.  Today there has been a sharp increase in the number of people suffering from various respiratory problems and in many cases it is as a result of the levels of humidity (moisture) within their home being high.

When purchasing any sort of dehumidifiers including those made by Mitsubishi there are certain factors which need to be taken into consideration.  You should select one that is of a relevant size for the room in which it is to be located.  One of the large Mitsubishi dehumidifiers can help to remove moisture from the room much more quickly but they do create high levels of noise.  Plus choose ones that feature a humidistat along with a light to indicate that the time has come to empty the water storage tank.

Another thing to make sure that the Mitsubishi dehumidifiers you purchase have is a timer.  These then allow you the chance to control the levels of humidity within a room better.  So you can regulate them properly and ensure that no further problems can be created through the levels of humidity being either too high or too low within a room.

Gun Safe Accessories: What do You Need?

MJ Marks asked:

Now that you have the perfect gun safe to keep your firearms out of little hands or your collection safe from robbery, do you need any gun safe accessories? What type of accessories could you possibly need? Well, you never know until you see what is available, and then you find things that you simply cannot do without!

One important category of accessories to consider to protect your firearms is a dehumidifier. Many high end safes already come equipped with a dehumidifier, but if not, there are a variety of options available. One nifty option uses crystals to absorb extra moisture, so you just have to hang or place the unit in your safe. The plus side is that no batteries or outlet needed. The down side is that the moisture absorbing crystals need to be “renewed” once they are filled to capacity. This is usually done by plugging in the unit so that the built in heater can dry out the crystals. There is a color indicator that lets you know when it is time to renew the unit, but typically it is about every 6 - 8 weeks, and then the unit has to be plugged in for about 8 hours before you can place it back into your safe.

If your safe has an outlet, or a small hole in the back to run a cord, then a regular dehumidifier would be a great gun safe accessory option for you. This type of dehumidifier actually circulates the air within the safe.

The next top item on a list of must have gun safe accessories is interior lighting. Same as above, upper end safes often come with some type of lighting, but if not you have a couple of options. There are fluorescent lighting kits that can be installed, or I even have seen an interior rope light that can be installed that has a magnetic switch so that the light comes on when the safe door is opened.

If you have pistols, you can get a pistol rack to sit on a shelf in your safe that keeps your pistols nicely organized and accessible while maximizing space. You can get racks that hold from four to eight hand guns, and I have seen them in both metal and wood.

Another option for storing pistols are holsters or pistol pockets that velcro to the inside of the door of the safe. You can fit quite a few holsters on the door of your safe, freeing up a lot of room for other items.

Many safe manufacturers now offer a variety of safe interiors, and some of them are specially designed to fit on the safe door with an assortment of pockets and holsters for a wide range of items from pistols to ammo or any other small accessories you may need to store in your safe.

If you have an older safe that you would like to update, you can install an electronic safe lock that may have fancy features such as a time delay mode.

Other gun safe accessories that are handy if you use your safe for more than just guns are things like jewelry trays and small 2-4 drawer storage chests that can be placed in the safe and keep small valuables organized.

As you can, see there many options available when it comes to gun safe accessories. Though they may not all be for you, you may discover that there are some things that you simply cannot do without as they bring greater organization to your safe or helps to protect your items from rust or mildew.

5 Simple and Easy Heat Pump Tips

James Walton asked:

You made a wise choice and invested in a heat pump air conditioner. You now have an extremely efficient heater for the winter months, with the added benefit of cooling during summer. So how do you use your new purchase effectively?

Close windows and doors

This is often overlooked and doing so can save a lot of money on electricity bills. Heat energy can transfer through your doors and windows into, or from, the air outside quite readily. Close your windows and exterior doors and your air conditioner will run much more efficiently.

Use the correct mode and set the temperature correctly

Select the correct mode. The sun symbol means heating, the snowflake symbol means cooling. A drop of water is the dehumidify or dry mode. It really isn’t rocket science. For heating purposes, we usually recommend 23?C. For cooling, we usually recommend 21?C.

It is a hot day and you want it nice and cool indoors. The temperature inside is currently 28?C and you select 21?C on your controller. The system will then provide cooling until the temperature reaches just below 21?C. Your heat pump will continue to run until the air temperature in the room is the same as the temperature on the controller and then switch over into power saving mode. When the temperature rises to 22?C, the system automatically starts cooling again.

If you set it to 16?C, it will run and run and run (kind of like the Energizer bunny) and may never actually reach the desired set point. The more you run your appliance, the more it costs you in electricity.

You will find your own happy medium somewhere around those figures, but we do highly recommend 23?C for heating and 21?C for cooling.

Correct vane positioning

For cooling, have the vanes pointing horizontal. Cool air falls naturally towards the ground. By forcing cool air across the room at a high level, you improve the effectiveness of your heat pump.

For heating, have the vanes pointing down towards the floor. Warm air rises naturally. By forcing the air downwards and letting it rise makes it much more efficient. By pointing the vanes down, you also eliminate the cold feet problem that many people have reported.

Dehumidifying or ‘dry’ function explained

The dehumidify or ‘dry’ function works by extracting water moisture from the air. It does this by running in the cooling mode. The moisture or humidity in the warm air condensates on the cold surface of the coil and runs away down the drain as a liquid.

Running your heat pump in dry mode during winter does not work. Cold air doesn’t hold much moisture. 3What you need to do is run it on heating to keep the room temperature high and allow the moisture to evaporate. Once you have the room extra warm and the air feels humid, switch the system to dehumidify for a short period before repeating the cycle.

Maintaining your heat pump

Use the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner and clean any dust off the case on a regular basis. Remove the filters and disinfect and clean them with warm water once every two to three months. By keeping your air conditioning system clean, you will save money and run effectively and efficiently.
